Today it seems ages ago but memories about the 8 years I resided in Yeoville, Johannesburg, are still extremely vivid. Mikhail Subotzky’s picture below shows the hill I looked at from my balcony. Last night Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse won the prestigious Deutsche Borse Prize for their book on Ponte City, the building at the left side of the picture. Thanks for keeping the dream alive!
In Zuid-Afrika is op 89-jarige leeftijd Ruth Mompati overleden. In de jaren vijftig begonnen als typiste in de advocatenpraktijk van Nelson Mandela ontwikkelde ze zich tot één van de iconen van de vrijheidsstrijd in haar land. Haar naam stond echter ook geruime tijd symbool voor een bekrompen en discriminerende benadering van homoseksualiteit. En later voor het vermogen om van inzicht te veranderen. Continue reading
